How to play
- Each turn you roll your dice. Drag a die onto a move, or tap the die and then the move. A move fires when its slots are full.
- Read each slot: “1–4” takes a 4 or less, “5–6” takes a 5 or 6, “pair” needs two equal dice, “in a row” needs three dice like 3, 4, 5.
- Each move works once a turn unless it says ×2. Re-roll and split moves hand you new dice to place.
- The pest shows what it will do next. Block soaks up its hits until your next turn. Poison takes HP at the start of each turn, then drops by 1.
- Win a fight to earn seeds and pick a new move. Spend seeds at the seed stall. Rest spots heal you or sharpen a die.
- When a run ends, you keep your acorns. Spend them at camp on new critters and shed perks.
- Hard mode is optional: no shed perks, tougher pests, and the run’s acorns only count if you beat the boss.
- Keyboard: number keys pick a die, letters A to F place it on a move, Enter ends the turn, P pauses.
- Earn 3 stickers in this game for your QuickBOP sticker book.

Pip Patch is a free dice roguelite you play in your browser: roll your dice, place them on your moves, and clear eight rooms of garden pests before a boss. Every run is new, and the acorns you earn stay with you for the next one.
Why dice in a vegetable patch
Dice turn every turn into a small puzzle. You can’t choose your numbers, only where they go. A 6 might make a big hit, or it might be better spent on a shield when a beetle is about to swing.
The garden keeps it friendly. You play a hedgehog, a frog, a bee or a tortoise, and the trouble comes from caterpillars, mildew and hail, with a big bramble or a storm cloud waiting at the end. Pests get cleared away, and nothing is gory.
A short history of roguelikes
The genre is named after Rogue, a dungeon game made around 1980 by Michael Toy and Glenn Wichman, students at the University of California, Santa Cruz, with later help from Ken Arnold. It spread through university computers running BSD Unix. Rogue drew its dungeon with letters and symbols, built a new one every game, and when your character died, that game was over for good.
Many later games copied that pattern, and players began calling them roguelikes. Newer games kept the fresh map and the fresh start, but let you carry something from one run to the next, such as a new character or a lasting upgrade. Those are often called roguelites. Pip Patch is one: a run can end, but your acorns and unlocks stay.
How to play Pip Patch
- Pick a critter at camp. Each one starts with its own three moves.
- Choose a room on the path. A room holds a pest, a seed stall or a shady rest. Room 8 is the boss.
- In a fight, your dice roll at the start of each turn. Drag a die onto a move, or tap the die and then the move. Each slot shows what it takes, such as 1–4, even or pair.
- Check what the pest will do next. It shows under its health bar. Block soaks up its hits until your next turn.
- Press End turn. The pest acts, then you roll again.
- Win a fight to earn seeds and pick one of three new moves. You can hold six.
- Spend seeds at the stall on moves, a sharper die, a snack or a spare die. A rest spot heals you or sharpens a die.
- When the run ends, your acorns go back to camp. Spend them on new critters and shed perks.
- Hard mode is optional. Shed perks are off, pests are tougher, and the run’s acorns only count if you beat the boss.
Tips
Read the pest first. If it is about to block, hit it now. If it is about to hit for 11, a shield is worth more than a few extra points of damage.
Fill the fussy slots first. Place dice on moves that need a pair or a 5–6 before you use the “any” moves, which take whatever is left.
Sharpen your dice. Each sharpen lifts a die’s lowest face by 3, so a 1 becomes a 4. Two or three sharpens make every roll steadier.
Pip Patch questions
What is a roguelite?
A game where each run is new and can end, but some progress stays with you between runs. In Pip Patch the map, the pests and the moves on offer change every run. The acorns you earn are kept, and they unlock critters and perks.
How long is one run?
A full run is eight rooms and takes a few minutes. A first run often ends in the middle rooms, and that is normal. Every run still earns acorns.
What does Hard mode change?
Hard mode switches off your shed perks, makes every pest a little tougher, and keeps the run’s acorns only if you beat the boss. Critters you have unlocked are still yours to pick. It keeps its own best score and stars, so your normal progress is never touched.
